If the utilization of adventure-based experiential education into school settings is so old and well established, then why write a book like this one at the time? the answer is fairly simple. Most of the people who have been implementing these programs into school settings have been so busy doing their work that they have not had a lot of time to engage in reflection and writing about why and what they do.
Although there has been a great deal of writing about adventure programming and about the general incorporation of experiential learning into school-based curriculum, there has been very little written about the specifics of developing challenge courses in schools and in a way that is useful to practitioners in school settings.
This book was not written for professional challenge ropes course builders. It was not written for seasoned practitioners of adventure programming already in the schools. Rather, it was written for people in the schools who are interested in the application of adventure programming and who want useful information about the nuts and bolts of implementation of such programs. Specifically, this book was written to help individuals such as educators, administrators, and other professionals develop safe, effective challenge course programs for their organisation.
Keep in mind that this book does not provide individuals with the technical skills necessary to facilitate challenge course experiences. In other words it is not a training manual. Instead, it provides the information on how to develop your program, as well as information on teaching these activities in more traditional education settings.
